Another example being the virtual 3D world avatars that are becoming available. It would be interesting to find out how long it takes someone to bring out one application that can interact with a group of applications that have a similar function. And is this phenomenon to do with market saturation number of users or number of competitors? I think its more than just the techs you are looking at,

I vote (and use) GTalk most of all - least bloated, as you say at least tipping a hat to something vaguely open, and nice functionality too...
