Coming to this a tad late, but appreciated this post and certainly agree Maes is worth celebrating. I thought your criteria for selection was interesting too, as I'm so often reflecting lately on how gender operates in our environment. I wonder how the issue of 'public' exposure -- getting yourself known and out there -- is a criteria that automatically privileges men (or masculine modes of discourse). A lot more to say on this one (what's 'masculine' discourse?) but I'll leave it there. A lot to think about and something I am interested in thinking through more.

Karyn,
I agree about the generosity. I hadn't seen the TED talk - in fact I had no idea what Pattie was doing now until I sat down to write this post. Great to see that she is still doing impressive stuff.

What a great choice! I hadn't even heard of Maes until recently. Just today I posted a link to her talk at TED on my blog... and that was before I saw your post.

What impresses me so much about Maes in the video is that she is so generous with the credit, making sure that her student gets all the applause, and enormously enjoying his standing ovation. Such generosity is sure to bring its own reward. Who wouldn't want to work with such a person?

Thanks Sarah! I enjoyed rediscovering that interview and realising what an impact Pattie's thinking had on my subsequent work.

Great post Paul. Thanks for putting so much energy and thought into writing this for Ada Lovelace Day- that's a woman I hadn't heard of.
